“What do you think a ransom means?” I waited until Chief Terry had left to ask Landon the most obvious question.

“I don’t know.” He sat on the couch, his expression clouded. He was thinking things through. “Maybe this was always a money grab.”

He didn’t look convinced. “You don’t believe that.”

“Hmm.” He slid his eyes to me and offered up a half-smile, his thumb going to my cheek so he could absently brush at it.

“You don’t believe that,” I repeated. “You think something else is going on.”

“I think that it’s a weird way to make a ransom demand,” he admitted. “I also think we don’t have a choice but to treat it as a real demand.”

Deep down, I knew he was right. “What do you want me to do?”

He cracked a grin, one that filled his eyes with warmth. “I don’t suppose you would consider going home and cooking bacon all day?”

I made a face. “No.”

“I didn’t think so.” He leaned forward and rested his forehead against mine, falling into silence. I was about to prod him when he opened his mouth. “Do what comes naturally, Bay. You’re good at figuring things out. You have amazing instincts, and they rarely lead you astray. Just ... be careful.”

“The shadow monster is dead,” I reminded him. “There’s nothing for you to worry about.”

“That would be nice to believe but ... I don’t. How do you know the monster is really dead? If it didn’t have form, there was no body for you to check.”

I almost tripped over my tongue I was so surprised by the statement. “I didn’t consider that.”

“I just want you to be careful. I know you’re capable of doing anything you set your mind to. I don’t want you hurt in the process.”

“I’ll be good.”

His lips curved. “Not too good. I like my girl when she’s a little bad.” He swooped in and gave me a kiss before standing. “I have to go work on this.”

“Go.” I made small shooing motions. “I’m going to check in with Clove and Thistle. If I come up with any ideas, I’ll let you know.”

“I would appreciate that. If I get any new information, I’ll let you know.”

I couldn’t hide my smirk. “Is this us compromising?”

“Apparently so.”

“It’s kind of nice.”

“It is.”

“It won’t last. We’ll fight again eventually.”

He tapped the end of my nose. “Don’t go begging for trouble. Let’s enjoy it for now, huh?”

“Absolutely.”

CLOVE AND THISTLE WERE BUSY WORKING on a new window display when I entered Hypnotic. Unlike previous redecorating, it wasn’t joy they were sharing in a new artistic endeavor as much as annoyance.

“You’re putting it in the wrong spot,” Clove complained, hands on hips as she watched Thistle hang stained-glass moons and stars from the rafters above the display. “They should be more spread out.”

From her perch on the ladder, Thistle scorched Clove with the darkest look in her repertoire. “If you don’t like how I’m doing it, maybe you should come up here and do it yourself.”

Clove rolled her eyes. “I can’t get on a ladder and you know it.
